At Alta Vita Hospice, we believe education is an essential part of care. Our Resources page provides helpful guides, answers to common questions, and expert advice to help patients and families make informed decisions.

What is Hospice Care?

Hospice care is specialized medical care designed for patients with a life expectancy of six months or less. The focus of hospice care is not on curing the patient but on enhancing their quality of life. This approach allows patients to find comfort and peace while continuing to engage in meaningful experiences with their loved ones.

At Alta Vita Hospice, care is delivered by a dedicated team of skilled professionals, including nurses, physicians, volunteers, therapists, and chaplains. This team collaborates to address the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of both patients and their families.

In addition to medical care, hospice services provide pain management, emotional support, and spiritual guidance tailored to each individual’s unique circumstances and wishes.

Who is Eligible for Hospice Care?

Hospice care is available to individuals diagnosed by their physician with a life expectancy of six months or less. For Medicare recipients, hospice care is fully covered, meaning there are no out-of-pocket costs for services.

Eligibility includes a wide range of illnesses, such as:

  • Cancer
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Heart, lung, or kidney conditions
  • Neurological diseases like ALS
  • Strokes or dementia

Patients may continue to receive hospice care beyond six months if their doctor recertifies that hospice remains appropriate for their needs. Hospice care is for anyone—regardless of age—who wants to prioritize comfort, dignity, and the ability to enjoy meaningful moments.

What Services Does Hospice Include?

Hospice care is highly personalized, with services tailored to each patient’s medical condition, living environment, and family situation. Some common hospice services include:

  • Comprehensive medical care provided by a team of doctors, nurses, hospice aides, and social workers
  • 24/7 access to hospice professionals for support and emergencies
  • Medications to relieve pain, nausea, and other symptoms
  • Medical supplies and equipment such as hospital beds or wheelchairs
  • Short-term respite care for family caregivers
  • Emotional and bereavement support for families

How to Choose a Hospice Provider

Selecting the right hospice provider is an important decision. It’s a good idea to start your research early so that you’re prepared when the time comes.

Here are a few tips to help you choose:

  1. Ask for Recommendations: Consult your doctor, hospital, or state health department for a list of local providers.
  2. Research and Compare: Look online for reviews and gather information on the hospice providers in your area.
  3. Ask Key Questions: When interviewing providers, consider asking:

    • Is the hospice certified by Medicare and compliant with state and federal requirements?
    • Is staff available 24/7, and who will be the primary contact?
    • How are emergencies handled?
    • What medical equipment and medications are included in the services?

Feel free to ask any additional questions to ensure you feel confident in your choice of provider.
